How to create a living Christmas at home

Stasia Nawrocki came back from Christmas in November knowing exactly how she would decorate her Edmonton home for the holidays this year.

“Paper whites!” she declared.

Cory Christopher, a well-known Edmonton designer and presenter at the pre-Christmas festival at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, had used them in his class and in his festive rendering of Whistler Cabin, which was open for guests to tour.

Nawrocki, creative author and retailer of Dansk fame, is a former presenter herself at Christmas in November. She was determined to make paper whites, the star-like narcissus grown from bulbs, the highlights of her own holiday decor this year. Related to the daffodil, paper whites are easy bulbs to force midwinter, and are popular for their starry blooms and captivating fragrance.

But the little flowers were just the beginning of a decorating theme that would literally come alive in Nawrocki’s stylish mid-century modern home in Edmonton.

Once the theme was determined, the first thing Nawrocki did was to harvest moss from outside her house, before the ground froze. This would be incorporated in several live arrangements, with the paper whites. For height, she added twiggy branches twinkling with tiny lights and lemon cypress, which are small, live trees of brilliant green. The result is a fresh and airy look of natural beauty.

And though the bulbs are still developing, they should be in bloom in plenty of time for Christmas.

Her tall slim Christmas tree is covered in silver balls highlighted by ornaments in the lime and aubergine tones that reflect the rest of Nawrocki’s decor. Each November, she changes the colour scheme by switching out only a dozen or so contrasting ornaments to complement the silver ones that are standard from year to year. By using the metallics as neutrals, “it’s an easy and inexpensive way to change up the colour scheme of your tree,” she says.

The same follows with her dining table. Neutral dinnerware is easily enhanced with contrasting candles and napkins. Fresh flowers complete the look.

“But you don’t need a lot of them,” says Nawrocki, who repurposed a floral arrangement of lilies and grasses by trimming the stems of the lily clusters and setting them in shallow cube vases. “That way they get lots of water and last longer,” she adds. Hers were already more than a week old and still looked fresh.

In full view of the dining table, on the outside deck, an urn is featured with a globe of mini lights resting on a collar of evergreen. Further along the deck is a stand of sturdy birch branches up-lit with small flood lights. Bird feeders along the deck share their bounty and welcome feathered guests.

“I love nature and all things outdoors,” says Nawrocki. “Bringing the outdoors in is a natural and lovely way to decorate for the holidays.”

Wedding Tales: Couple busts a move on their wedding day

$

A successful wedding usually includes a happening dance floor. This was especially true when Chantel Cabaj and Andrew Wong tied the knot last January.

The couple hired Uptown, a cover band who perform party-friendly classics. And in-between sets, Cabaj and Wong covered off other genres like hip-hop with their own curated playlist of tunes. “We got all audiences up on the dance floor at some point,” says Cabaj.

The bride also honoured her own dance background. “I grew up Ukrainian dancing, and with any Ukrainian dancing party you have a Kolomyjka,” she says.

“Everyone forms a circle and everyone jumps in and does Ukrainian dancing tricks. We did an updated version, so it started with Ukrainian dancing music, but then it cut into a playlist we had made, and we had a bunch of our friends set to jump in and do dance-offs throughout, and then Andrew and I did one, and all the girls did one and the parents did one.”

Their wedding’s dance party meant their relationship had come full circle, since a love of dance is what brought them together in the first place.

Wong was born and raised in Edmonton and Cabaj grew up near Cold Lake. When they were in their last year of law school at the University of Alberta, they met through a charity show put on by their faculty. Cabaj was in charge of choreography, and Wong participated in a male-only number called the “man dance.”

“I asked Andrew to organize the man dance, and I did all of the initial upfront work in pursuing (him), and used the dance as my opportunity to do that,” says Cabaj, laughing.

“The fact that our meeting is tied into dancing is kind of nice,” adds Wong, “because that’s something that’s stayed a part of who we are.”

Their relationship began on Jan. 2, 2012, and they chose that date for their wedding four years later. But that wasn’t the only reason.

“All of our friends got married in the summer prior to our wedding, so we were all wedding’d out,” says Cabaj. “We didn’t want any more summer weddings. And both of us have December birthdays, so December’s always been kind of a celebration time for us anyway, and having it during the holiday break, we knew everyone would be in a good spirit to party.”

The couple lives in Calgary, but they decided to get married back in Edmonton, a great meeting point for their friends and families.

They had both a Chinese tea ceremony — Wong’s father is Chinese — and a traditional Western ceremony at the Union Bank Inn downtown. Their reception was at the Polish Veterans Hall’s Country Lodge (think: elegant log cabin). It’s rustic and surrounded by ranching land, but located in the city.

“My dad’s Polish,” says Cabaj. “So it was a cool combination. We had the Chinese tea ceremony but then we did all the Polish food, so it was a bit of both sides.”

Cabaj wanted their celebration to be seasonal, not ‘Christmassy’. Hence her “asymmetrical, funky” red and pink bouquet, a wall of fresh greenery they used as a backdrop, and an overall industrial-chic vibe achieved through geometric metallic shapes, a mixed-metallics colour palette for the bridesmaids, and a large metallic canvass Wong’s painter-mother made for them to use as a ‘guest painting’ in place of a guest book.

Despite having gone dress shopping in New York City, Cabaj found her wedding dress at Novelle Bridal Shop in Edmonton.

The couple took photos at several locations around the city, but the most spectacular ones were done at the Ice Castles in Hawrelak Park, an idea that excited both the couple and their photographer Jessica Fern Facette.

“Jessica had a friend who helped build it,” says Cabaj. “And we got really lucky on our wedding because it was only the third day it was open, so it wasn’t really (popular) yet. Her friend really helped us have a little area where other people wouldn’t be in the background.”

The dress code for the wedding was bold, and Cabaj and Wong both had an outfit change later in the night — hers into a white onesie, his a velvet jacket and tuxedo pants.

Wong’s favourite part of the event came during the ceremony. They both wrote their own vows.

“We are not at all sappy people, but it was one of those moments where it was genuine,” he says. “It wasn’t forced and it was really heartfelt.”

Cabaj agrees.  “A lot of people were crying because I cried — and I never cry! That was the moment everyone could tell how genuine everything was, and how the wedding was so ‘us’.”

Paula Simons: Not your granny's brassiere: Sports bras now out in the open at city rec centres

$

As of Thursday morning, a new dress code is in place at the city’s recreation centres.

Or, if you like, a new un-dress code.

Starting Jan. 12, people will specifically be allowed to wear sports bras, tank tops and cropped tops that expose their mid-riffs, as long as those tops are designed for “fitness purposes.”

That’s quite a departure from the previous confusing and rather vague dress code, which required gym patrons to wear “appropriate” attire that was not “overly revealing” and which was “mindful of the comfort of other users.”

Those old rules were just so open to sexist interpretation. They could easily be read as putting the onus on women to police their attire so as not to discombobulate the men around them who might be made “uncomfortable” by the mere sight of a female shoulder or rib cage.

“The old guidelines were very weak in terms of what appropriate attire for a recreation centre means,” said Annett Kamenz, the city’s supervisor of recreation and physical activity experiences. “The new guidelines are more specific.”

Kamenz said the new rules will bring Edmonton’s public recreation centres in line with the rules at private gyms: “The fitness sector is changing and trends are changing.”

What prompted this sudden change?

Back in December, you may recall, the CBC first reported on the story of a woman named Coral Wiebe, who complained she’d been asked to cover up her sport bra by staff at the Meadows rec centre in southeast Edmonton.

Kamenz acknowledged the dramatic reversal of city policy was spurred, in part, by the Wiebe’s complaint and the resulting press attention. But, she insisted, the city already had a change in rules under consideration: “This just accelerated the process.”

Well, that’s one coy way to put it.

Dress codes themselves are deeply odd and idiosyncratic things. They aren’t based on standards of public decency, or gender roles, or logic, so much as they are on social convention.

People were outraged in 1999 when American soccer player Brandi Chastain whipped off her jersey to celebrate a World Cup victory, exposing her sports bra. Yet women who play Olympic beach volleyball must wear tops that expose at least as much skin.

U.S. soccer player Brandi Chastain shocked many when she whipped off her jersey after a World Cup win.

U.S. soccer player Brandi Chastain shocked many back in 1999 when she whipped off her jersey after a World Cup win.

And that doesn’t even begin to deal with the double standard that demands women cover up more of their body than men.

But the issue of women exercising at gyms in sports bras isn’t just about how they cover up “naughty bits” like cleavage and nipples and “under-boobs.”

It’s about how we “code” clothing.

Most bras, be they sporty or not, conceal just about as much as bathing suit tops or tank tops. But traditionally, the brassiere has been coded as a private undergarment, an intimate private piece of apparel that doesn’t belong “outside” in the public realm.

In decades past, no “lady” would appear in public in her bra — even if she’d wear a bikini or a strapless ball gown. Heck, no “lady” would let her bra strap show.

But the 21st-century sports bra isn’t your granny’s brassiere. It blurs the line between public and private. Heck, it pretty much erases it. These days, a sturdy sports bra is more a piece of sports equipment than a wisp of lingerie.

Sports bras aren’t for me. I can’t imagine working out in one, even in the privacy of my own basement.

But that’s not the point.

Whether you love sports bras or loathe them, the city’s old rules were so arbitrary, so relative, so judgmental. They were inevitably going to cause embarrassment and misunderstanding, because they left rec centre staff and rec centre patrons with no objective standards for what was or wasn’t acceptable dress.

Will the new rules address every mode of dress? Nope. The rules will still forbid women from wearing bikini bathing suit tops or conventional brassieres in the gym. And they’ll still prevent men from going topless. Inevitably, there will be people down the road who question those restrictions, too.

And I imagine there will also be people out there who object to the normalization of sports bras, tank tops and crop tops in the gym, too — especially when worn by women who don’t have the “perfect” bodies of fashion models.

But Kamenz said they’ll deal with that, too.

“We serve all Edmontonians, from newborns to seniors,” she says. “Are there going to be different opinions out there? Yes. But we’re asking people to tolerate and (be) accepting.”

Wedding in Victoria High School's abandoned pool like a scene from a movie

It poured rain on Larisse Campbell and Jordan Dowler-Coltman’s wedding day last July 16. But the pool party they were having underneath their former high school, Victoria School of the Arts, was hot, totally dry, and everything they’d dreamed of.

The couple didn’t get together until years after secondary school, when they were both living in Vancouver. But Vic played a big part in their lives and romance.

“We knew we wanted to have some element at Vic, given that’s how we connected, and a lot of our closest friends went there,” says Larisse.

Jordan’s mom, Tami, is the principal at Vic, and his dad, Greg, was Larisse’s drama teacher.

Later, Larisse did her Bachelor of Education with a major in drama at the University of Alberta. It was when she did her practicum back at her former high school that Greg — knowing she was headed to Vancouver — suggested she link up with his son, who was living there, too.

She did, via Facebook. But the couple started dating after a serendipitous real-life sighting. “I was on a bus and I looked out the window and saw a pretty girl in a black coat,” says Jordan. “I recognized her and I sent her a text.”

It was like a scene out of a movie — fitting, given that was the industry in which they were both working. The movies would go on to play a big role in their wedding day. But first, the venue.

The obvious first choice for Jordan, an independent filmmaker, and Larisse, artistic director of a children’s theatre company, was Vic’s theatre. But the space was too big for their celebration.

Larisse had been thinking about the start of their relationship, how they’d spent a lot of time in and around a pool for an underwater film they’d worked on as part of Jordan’s Bachelor of Fine Arts.

“So I said to Jordan, ‘What state is Vic’s pool in’? He laughed and said, ‘Larisse, it’s a massively dirty storage unit’.”

“The pool hadn’t been used since the 1970s,” says Jordan. “It was condemned because it was leaking. It had never really been used for something else, and only in the last 10 years, they’ve used it as a storage space.”

But the idea grew on them. “We liked that it looked like an old movie backdrop, with old flats and cameras,” says Larisse.

The idea was that they’d have their ceremony in the empty, cleaned-out pool. But it would be a massive undertaking.

After the OK from the mother-of-the-groom/principal, it took an army of students, custodial staff, friends and family to do the expected tasks, like hauling out decades of gear and power-washing 40 years of grime, and the unexpected ones, like fixing a sewage backup.

Jordan’s best man Craig even managed to get the pool’s sub lights, which hadn’t been switched on since 1970, glowing again.

“It was really the community coming together to make this space happen,” says Jordan. “And then Larisse designing what she wanted to put in it.”

What she wanted was whimsical and colourful. “Kate Spade was the inspiration,” she says. “I wanted stripes and sparkles and pink.”

Jordan’s brother Tim made the pink watercolour aisle runner of her dreams, and gold Chiavari chairs filled the pool.

“We wanted big Geronimo balloons in all areas of the wedding. We went through three massive tanks of helium… thousands of dollars,” says Larisse, laughing.

“We had the outside aisles of the pool and deck area filled with elements from the theatre, movie canisters, film cameras and lights,” adds the bride. “It really had this old Hollywood feel.”

Says Jordan: “It was like someone had laid chairs there to have a wedding on an old soundstage movie pool.”

Bridesmaids wore a range of pink shades to match the Cory Christopher-designed florals, and the groom and groomsmen’s pink-heart-patterned ties and pocket squares were custom-made.

The couple’s Pomeranian, Georgia, made the trip down the aisle too, particularly significant since she’d been a gift to Larisse from Jordan when he’d proposed on Christmas morning in 2014.

Their reception was in the gymnasium at the Boyle Street Plaza, a space they liked for its community-first mandate.

The design touches and entertainment theme carried over, with a seating chart organized by movies, musicals and TV shows the couple loves, and a cabaret show with performances by many of their entertainer family members and friends which they gave in lieu of gifts.

The couple referred to their wedding as “the production,” a fitting title. “We wanted our wedding to reflect the community of artists that we love and grew up in,” says Larisse.

“We both realized early on that a wedding is about you and your partner, but it also has a lot to do with the friends and family that got you there.”

An exciting fashion first lurks behind the white plastic hoarding at 10330 Whyte Ave. as John Fluevog Shoes steps out in Edmonton.

The long-anticipated arrival is tentatively scheduled for March 25, 2017, according to publicists for the popular shoe brand, which got its start in Vancouver in 1970. Expanding to the American market in the 1980s, Fluevog now has nearly two dozen stores across North America.

Known for a range of unconventional styles, such as Victorian and art deco shoes along with its signature Angel boots, Fluevog shoes have been worn by celebrities such as Madonna, Whoopi Goldberg and Woody Harrelson.
